With both coastline and countryside, there really is something for everyone, whether you’re an adrenalin-fuelled thrill seeker and keen to burn off some energy, or just want to observe the area’s nature or learn about its history. Here is just a small selection of the many exciting and inspiring places to visit with the family in Devon – you’re sure to have a great day out!
Dartmoor Zoo, Sparkwell, Plymouth PL7 5DG

Located just 20 minutes from Plymouth, this 33-acre site hosts the largest collection of Big Cats in the South West. Visitors can see African lions, Amur tigers, jaguar and cheetah. Other animals include Iberian wolves, European brown bears, tapir, ostrich, meerkats, otters and monkeys. The daily timetable of events includes talks at feeding time and close-up animal encounters. During the school holidays, there are also falconry displays and kids’ activities, such as quiz trails and face-painting. There are large picnic and outdoor play areas, and refreshments are available from the Jaguar Restaurant. There is also a gift shop.
The zoo was purchased by the Mee family in 2006 and their story has been immortalised in the book ‘We Bought A Zoo’, which was subsequently made into a film of the same name.

This is the ideal place to visit if you, or your children, prefer your holidays on the active side! Located on the northern edge of Dartmoor, it has activities suitable for all ages. Activities on offer include weaselling, mountain boarding and archery. There’s also a climbing wall and a high ropes course. The centre has its own private lake, where you can try gorge scrambling, kayaking, raft building and canoeing. There’s a daily programme of three activities to choose from; alternatively, you might want to book onto a whole day of water sports, rock climbing or paddling down the River Exe. For those seeking the ultimate adrenalin rush, there’s the Dartmoor Drop – a free fall abseil from a nearby viaduct. Don’t forget to admire the stunning views of Dartmoor on your way down!
Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, Milford, Lifton PL16 0AT
This unique centre is home to the National Fairground Collection. It captures the magic and nostalgia of a bygone age through exhibits, vintage engineering and stunning artwork displays and offers a matchless opportunity to experience all the fun of a traditional fairground. Visitors can enjoy vintage rides, including merry-go-rounds with exquisitely carved wooden horses, and no visit to the fair would be complete without a turn on the dodgems. There’s also a selection of traditional fairground games. The centre also hosts a series of themed events throughout the year. There is a café and gift shop, housed in a beautifully converted barn.

Voted Best Visitor Attraction in Devon for two consecutive years, this multi-award-winning attraction is packed full of animals, displays, shows and activities and will keep every member of the family occupied! Get a taste of farm life by joining in goat milking, ferret racing, deer feeding and egg collecting or cheer on your favourite pig in the famous Pennywell Miniature pig races! Horse lovers will be well catered for: there’s everything from heavy horses to a herd of miniature ponies and even a retired Household Cavalry horse. There’s a collection of international poultry breeds in the Funky Fowl area, while guinea pigs, rabbits and tortoises are waiting to meet you in the pet’s corner. Tractor and trailer rides are available to get you round the farm and budding young farmers can test their driving skills in the Tractor Village. As well as a gift shop, there are two cafes and an ice-cream stall, and you are also welcome to bring your own picnic.
Becky Falls Woodland Park, Manaton TQ13 9UG
Set in a 50-acre site nestled into an ancient valley, Becky Falls has been welcoming visitors since 1903. Follow woodland walks along meandering streams and enjoy spotting the wildlife that frequents the area. There is a choice of trails to suit all ages and abilities: the Blue Trail offers a gentle stroll along the Becka Brook, but if you want to see the stunning 70-ft waterfall at the heart of the park or have a go at the boulder scramble, you’ll need to take the Red Trail. The Purple Trail offers more rugged terrain and views of the lower falls. Specifically for children, there’s a stamp trail with prizes for all plus twice-daily Animal Encounter sessions. Meet the Keeper sessions offer a chance to learn about the resident animals and the people who care for them, and to watch them being fed. If you feel hungry yourself, there’s a woodland café and a gift shop. Dogs are also welcome to join in the fun!
